Through the Passing TIme

Through the Passing TIme

A Poem by Delaney Thomas

Remember when the days would pass like years,

When the summers felt like a lifetime.

Remember when we saw magic in the everyday,

In an October breeze.

The high-speed trains of our lives came to a screeching halt,

As we laid under the stars wondering where our lives would go.

Remember when we couldn’t wait to grow up.

For our trains to finally leave the station.

Suddenly, an October breeze was nothing special.

We dreamed of bigger and better things,

Than what this town had to offer.

We wanted city lights and love stories,

And fancy new apartments.

Remember when the future felt far away.

We spent so much time looking ahead,

That we forgot to enjoy the days in the station.

Before our trains moved too fast to look out the window.

I wish we had taken the time,

To walk around that station.

To step outside and see the beauty in the present,

While everything was standing still.

I wish I had never taken for granted,

The people at that first train stop.

Because the ones I thought would forever stand beside me,

Had their own train to take.

Then before we knew it,

It was time for us to go.

To leave behind the station we knew so well.

And maybe we weren’t as ready as we thought.

Now I sit here,

On my high-speed train.

Traveling faster,

And faster.

Suddenly the years pass like days,

And the months like seconds.

I miss the days when life moved in slow motion.

But at least the past taught me something.

For now I take the time to feel an October breeze fill my lungs,

And kiss my cheek.

I look out the window at the blur of passing time,

And I enjoy the fleeting moments.

I embrace the ones I love,

Before our trains change tracks.

Because before we know it,

We’ll reach our final stop.

And when that moment comes,

I hope I look back,

Knowing I enjoyed the ride.
