High Tide

High Tide

A Poem by Nicole Doherty

I’d give anything for
my brain waves to hit low tide
because the tide’s been high
for far too long.

the levees have broken
and I can’t help
the flood of empty thoughts
that have been circulating
in my head
like a whirlpool of neurons
while I lie in bed.

and I can’t ignore the sound
of the waves crashing against my skull,
and it makes me lose sleep,
it makes me lose my sanity;
a usually calming sensation

that makes me cringe instead.

but as long as the moon
still takes the shape of you
I guarantee that the waves
will cease to silence
and I will live on
with an ocean in my head.

as long as the moon
shines as bright as your smile,
the waves will cease to ease
because you’re the reason
for the gravitational pull.
