THE HERO OF MULBERRY HILL

THE HERO OF MULBERRY HILL

A Poem by Eddie Phillips

There once was a old man named Robert
Who sat in the park on Mulberry Hill
Some said old Robert was a pervert
Others claimed he was mentally ill

He sat there each day watching children
Parents criticized and tried to shoo him away
But no matter their rudeness or displeasure
Robert came to the park everyday
It never mattered what they called him
Robert never returned a negative reply
He just came to the hill every morning

He sat quietly as the days slipped on by

On a sweet calm August afternoon
While old Robert sat quietly on the hill
A man with a gun came up running
He pointed his weapon with intentions to kill

Old Robert jumped from his posit
He wrestled the crazed man to the ground
As frightened parents & children went running
There came the boom of two horrible sounds

The crazed gun man lay there bleeding and dying
Sent to judgment for his possible sins
Old Robert stood briefly for a moment

Then he quickly fell down once again

Parents and children ran up to help him
Robert just smiled and said "It's all okay"
"See now I no longer have to wonder,
I know why God sent me to be here each day."
He smiled up at all the frightened children
Whispered "Lord thank you for your mercy today"
And at that last grateful moment

God took old Robert away

The people of Mulberry never forgot him
They dedicated a plaque in his honor to say:

THANK YOU ROBERT KILPATRICK
WHO WATCHED OVER OUR CHILDREN AT PLAY
WE WILL NEVER FORGET THE SACRIFICE
THAT YOU GAVE ON A SWEET AUGUST DAY
FOR YOU ARE THE GUARDIAN OF MULBERRY

A HERO IN EVERY WAY.

So I went to look for a picture for this fictional poem and came across a real plaque on a Mulberry Hill! It cracked me up because I just wrote this poem off the top of my head. I wanted to create a hero. I hope this poem reads well I didn't edit it. I wanted it to be my original thought so please let me know what you think.

Love this story - people can be suspicious of others, and while understand that, it keeps us from really knowing each other... Your Robert is the truest kind of hero! Now I am wondering what that real plaque on Mulberry Hill says... :)
