Burning, Baited Breath

Burning, Baited Breath

A Chapter by emilythestrange

Just before he turned the corner I was hiding at, I ran and hid in the white cupboard on the wall. For once I was glad of my small size, and held my breath as he walked towards me. I could see him through the crack between the doors of the cupboard. He had pale skin and mid- length, wavy, greying, platinum hair. He had dark brown eyes so big I could see them from where I was. He was a little tall, but not massive. He looked quite heavy, and had an average build. He was wearing a tuxedo suit done in muted purple and yellow pinstripe fabric. He looked from side to side, and walked into the room that led to the room the others were in. I let out a burning, baited breath, and jumped down from the cupboard. I ran to the room where the tohers were- I saw Lydia and the man at once. The others were on the other side of the room, so I went and stood with them. They all looked at me, then looked back to Lydia, then did a double take. " Bee- Bee! We thought you were dead! " Flossie cried dramatically, hugging me. I pushed her off and crossed my arms, as Jake said, " No we didn't. We just thought he'd taken you prisoner" . I glared at him, and looked back to Lydia. The man and her were in deep conversation- but not the nice kind of conversation where you talk about the new movie that just came out. Lydia was talking loudly, though we couldn't hear what she was saying. She was stepping forward as she talked, pushing the man back towards the door, but then he just stopped moving. He was standing infront of us. " Lydia, my dear, do you think these measly offerings are going to win you your world back? They are children, nothing more than puppies. Maybe if you'd been stronger I wouldn't be here now and then you wouldn't be putting them in danger. But you weren't. All it took was a simple kidnapping and you sold your soul to me. But your sister wasn't grateful, now, was she? In fact, you would rather kill yourself than live with the shame that she herself took your place as my lady" he waved his fingers in the air slowly, conjuring up a women with the same shape face as Lydia, and the same curly hair as her. She smiled and put her hand on her hip. He clicked his fingers and she disapeared. " GET OUT!  " Lydia shouted, her eyes rappidly turning the colour of amethysts. " Fine, witch. No need to use a spell on me" he said, and walked out. Just like that. No big speech, no last words, just walked out. Lydia collapsed onto the ground, and we all rushed over to help her. We'd only known Lydia for a day, but we all liked her. And now we knew that she was powerful- something else we needed to know in case we never did get these gifts. Soon after the man had left, Miss. Ward rushed in, and fell to her knees next to Lydia. " Yer can go back ter yisser rooms. I'll take care 'av Lydia"

We all sat in a circle on the floor of my room, not saying anything, but all thinking the same thing: " What the hell just happened?" . " I'm going to bed" Jake said, and walked out. The others followed in a quick procession, so I was left on my own, sitting in the middle of my room. What's that quote again? I thought... Oh, I cant remember, I'll just go to bed. I dozed off my about midnight, but my dreams were filled with thoughts of gifts and evil men and ghost women.
