A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

earning an invitation

i'm carving out

a craving into your exposed impression

that outweighs the expression

that falls short from me

when i sit at your table,

enjoying the feast of your suppression

knowing there will be grace before the meal

and you might be tempted to feel

for me,

what i feel for you

when we finally sup together

napkins optional,

silverware sensuality set on the proper side

of a longing that longs to ignore etiquette

and just dig into plates of fate

with lips, fingers, hands

and plans

of reckless abandon.

I really like this. :)
To hell with being prim and proper.
I can almost see a scene with two people enjoying a polite meal but mentally undressing one another and well, you know...

ha ha...yes, thank you for your words, and the smile, Ana.

Having to restrain one's emotions for the sake of etiquette can be so stifling at times. What's worse is when both parties want to act with reckless abandon but don't out of some sense of propriety. The best gift that one can give to another is to give them the freedom to be who they are. When we put on that face, the one which hides the one within, we do ourselves the greatest disservice. There's so much tension within the lines of this one, a spirit bursting to break free.

I loved what you have written. "I'm carving out a carving into your exposed impression" something which evoked pleasure in me. The first lines are so very catchy and interesting that they leave the reader with no alternative, but to read the whole beautifully written poem.

thank you for your kind review, Vatsal.

how do you manage to make reckless abandon seem proper and inviting? carefully laid out plans seem so polar opposite to what it is offering or proposing.. I did stumble on "silverware sensuality set on the proper side" line... seems like there should be a pause there marked with some sort of punctuation.. I know I am out of practice reading poetry, but just thought i would share. a "feast of suppression" made me go back and read a few times... here's to hoping that the expression is expressed and it is what you hoped for--no longer needing to be suppressed but shared like a candlelit dinner with all of its warmth and comfort nourishing what is offered between the two.

I'm glad you're smiling, always better than a frown :)
Well written. This has a great flow. I get the sense that this can either relate to eating alone because of the ending line or with another abandoning all unecessary pretentious behavior
