tears spilled on the candle

tears spilled on the candle

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto
"

inspired by Kelly Scheppers' poem "an Icon"

"

tears spilled on the candle

her mole, a postage stamp

on a blond envelope of expression

the curly, unruly hair

much like her cryptic mind

licking the seal of

windblown reason

she wept with the rain

and she was mailed to the media

ripped open letters

no privacy of skin

just a beautiful bare storm

sent to her rainbow

much too soon

please, would someone find a blanket?

she is getting so cold.

So sad, the slow exploitation that leads to private heartache and death. You did a fine job of objectifying those whose beauty captures media and other superficial attention. Interesting contrast of the letters ripped open and the storm to her rainbow. Too late for the blanket, maybe not for others though. Unless the blanket is the sheet that covers a dead body. Interesting write.

Wow this is so well written Jacob - such a tender sweet reminder of such a sad tragedy. I don't think anyone will forget her any time soon!

What is the real story behind the legend. Marilyn Monroe. I wonder.

Beautiful, without reading anything else but your words, her face flashed too mind immediately, and Elton John Bevan singing in the background. Missed reading you while I've been away.

Marilyn.....she remains an icon so many years later. Yes, Kelly has written about her many times and now you have done her justice as well. Norma Jean.....she was never ready for the limelight. Lydi**

dear Jacob... the all-American girl... wrapped in
beauty and emotions... vulnerable to love.
You have expressed her life in poetry so delicately
sweetly to her rainbow's end. Tears on a candle as
we all mourn her passing... the perfect person asleep
on eternal clouds of devotion. truly, Pat

Jacob, your poetry is beautiful. Marilyn would
love to read your poem. Amen...
The mole, the blonde, images of Monroe was the instant thought that came to mind as well as her mysterious end, she didn't seem the type to overdose but neither did Heath Ledger. Yes with all her skin bared in the end, there was a coverup!!!

I always refer to poetry that moves me as "poetry with a pulse". This is extraordinary, and although I am most proud to have been an inspiration behind it, it is the concept from which you construed here that is most brilliant and deserving!

Bravo, my good friend! ...and thank you!

I like Papaya's review and couldn't say it better... privacy is getting much rarer these days, not only with celebs, but everyone's life... here in NYC you are on camera, your life recorded from the time you step out of your apartment door... your movements and activities monitored... and except for the obvious paparazzi, no one notices or even cares... we live in a 1984 world that even Orwell would shudder at...

as others have said, you treat this "icon" with tenderness and respect, your poem reminding us there are still human being left in the world...
