rabid apathy

rabid apathy

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

rabid apathy

bats search

for the crack of dawn

telephone lines to rest

line drive wings

over the fence of catastrophe

home plate shattered

America in the dark,

street lights burnt out for profit

souls burnt out for free

and Lady Liberty waves the white kerchief

dangerous practice, when those bats are flying

and no one in the stands is paying attention.

Quite the social commentary. I enjoyed reading this although it was a little depressing & angering. You so elegantly captured the sad situation. Good job.

thank you for your kind review, Pete.

I had to read the other reviews to be able to interpret your references, Jacob, but even over here , we sense the feeling of frustration that is overwhelming America. Capitalism, immature arrogance and pathetic tantrums appear to have overtaken leadership in this election. Our Brexit squabbles seem quite demure in comparison, but even we suffer from this growing apathy toward our political saviours.

I too shuddered at our Lady of Liberty surrendering....apathy and tyranny are becoming strange bedfellows of late and this poem speaks to the looming dread I feel and sense closing in. Thank you for the powerful images.

The world as we know it fouls out of control as the mad control the steering stick. Meanwhile, the apathetic eat hot dogs, hoping to get their faces on the jumbotron. Perhaps it's a telltale sign that we've lost confidence in our leaders. The image of Lady Liberty surrendering gives me shivers and I love the baseball theme.

thanks for your insights, Witty,

Interesting symbol being the bat, nature wise but also that as the world sleeps, things are out of our hands in human form also, both ways work beautifully here Jacob, remarkable piece...

While in the Navy, at reveille (first thing in the morning) and at taps (the last thing in the evening,) no matter where you were on the ship or on shore, you had to face in the direction of the flag and salute it.
Failure to salute it, failure to stand, failure to acknowledge it's symbolism would get you in some big trouble. The irony you speak of jacob is historically catastrophic yet ripe with retrospection.
That military practice was silly but regimented. Lady liberty is a symbol of liberty not of democracy.
And I would guess that most young Americans would much rather charge their smart phones than charge up a hill in battle...(sic)

Poems are restorative of feelings. That is simply what they do. i doubt sometimes if they even have
another purpose.....

You're the best..........dana

thank you for your very kind review, dana.
This makes me sad. I remember a time of my life when there was no question about the greatness of America. Now it seems like everyone has gone crazy. Has the American dream been shattered? It's hard not to be apathetic when the options we are presented with are so horrible. It makes ME want to wave the white kerchief and ignore what is happening and the implications of the future. I hate even paying attention because it pisses me off so badly! But, I have to soldier on. The future generations need that from us.

Very well said, I am truly dreading the outcome of the election as it seems America has given up on itself. Why else the 2 candidates left in the running. It is like that kerchief has all ready been taken. Valentine

There are many bats in the belfry of American racers at the moment, as an observer I find in fascinating and frightening in equal measure.

Excellent imagery and word structuring Mr J
