Blood Moons

Blood Moons

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Blood Moons

two tunes

one east

one south

the lyrics are shot dead

states of grief run amok

like a needle skipping over a warped world

the record keeps replaying

sounds different but the same

with each touch of the stylus

with each bullet fired

with each breath expired

people labeled

of color, of persuasion

of proper origin to some

like Walmart products

with everyday low prices

some we can bring back

some we just throw away

lives on sale to the most bitter shooter

i've heard this song too many times

i know it by heart

and my heart really wants to pull the arm away

that holds the needle

so the skipping can stop

and there could be comfortable silence

not the dead silence occurring now

after the

two tunes

of blood moons.

“The two tunes..of blood moons.”- yes, “ a needle skipping over a warped world”. A broken record, a perfect analogy that hits home- like a bullet, that sound that resonates over and over. Each amazing, heartfelt line, simile, metaphor, capturing this nightmare. A song of infinite sadness that now has two more verses. You speak for all of us who grieve. Thank you my friend.

this is one of the more touching things I have read on recent events unless my shattered mind is projecting. thought it was like Whiteman in its biblical truth as a secular cry of pain.

I wonder whether the killing would stop if there were no guns? There is so much hatred, I'm inclined to think that other methods would be sought, perhaps knives? It may reduce the numbers, but people would still die. That's what we have over here at the moment, a glut of knife killing by young people which are related to gangs and drugs. Your poem is such a clever analogy. Answers? The stylus is stuck in the groove, it will go on and on. The gun lobby is too strong in the USA and over here there needs to be a massive clean up of imported drug dealers lurking in our cities and targeting children.

Indeed the two most recent attrocities seem to be becoming common place. Love the treatment you have given them in the old record and stylus analogy. This feels somewhat resigned in tone despite the plea for it all to stop. The American Constitution gives the NRA licence to kill!
