the character between the binding

the character between the binding

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

the character between the binding

I am merely an anecdote

a passing story

the end is near

quotation marks enclose

I am a group of run-on sentences

collaborating with several conjunctions

who forgot their commas

and then ran off with all the periods.

I am the bearer of description

an adjective looking for an adverb

to join it as a scene is posed

and a theme arose

I am merely an anecdote

feeling supposition

from a reader

who thoughtfully perused me

I am a grateful exclamation point

feeling the surrender

of joyful merging

my theme the dream to share

I am merely imagination

do you know who I am

are you the mirror's image of me

should we merge

into a novel?

a romance or mystery or

something unedited

characters who think outside the pages

allowed to come to life

before they atrophy

into static beings

stuck between capital letters

and final punctuation.

dear Jacob… our English Teacher taught us to love Grammar and Literature… she would love ❤️ your poems, especially this One. I know I am drawn to you even in Geometry. You are the Breeze on a Summer Day and even in Spring. gently, Pat

thank you for your kindness, Pat,

luv you man! brilliant as always says i ... thinking along your lines .. i wonder if we are all one cliché after another ... the scope of life in repetition maybe ... our human limitations run through over and over by poets and other artists ... holding up a screen for others to see something of their own life .. i'm inspired in reading your "'the character between the binding" ... self introspection needed for me :)

I believe many of us have pages of this sort stashed away somewhere in case we need a word or an exclamation point at some point or the other. And maybe it is not so much the character between the binding as much as it is the character behind the binding. Really good my friend.

I have an exclamation point hidden in my Zippo...
thank you for your words, will,
j.
I loved this one! Personification of parts of speech...and yet it seems to be a bit of an autobiography as well. We all think of our demise as we age, but your final punctuation is not near, my friend. Lydi**

The book of you, and how pleased am I that I found it. There are many chapters left yet to read. Plenty of opportunity left yet for you to add to your many achievements and for remaining dreams to be fulfilled. Great poetry J.

You are all that and more; you have brought many things to the table of love, life and education.
You must be proud and humbled at the same time of your accomplishment.
Long live professor Jacob!

You are welcome sir Jacob.
you can tell you're getting old when you find yourself stuck between capital letters. And that final punctuation is a real killer.

especially when it is an ellipsis...that is three periods...ugh.
j.
I sense an invitation in these words, a keen sense of desire to merge with another character and become something lasting and memorable.

I also feel the regret of not having found someone very complementary, perhaps akin to a soulmate, as the end is perceived nigh.

Lastly, I love this oh so poetic line, "
I am merely an anecdote"

A powerful poem... You have such an amazing style!
