The Finish Line

The Finish Line

A Poem by Barbara Walker

When pain came into my life,

it stole my self-reliance and my independence.

It's taken all purpose from my life.

No one can count on me, including myself.

I tried to cram the pain down, as if it were a jack-in-the-box,

but now, it's destroying the very light force out of me.

I feel as if I've been forced to run and run and run.

Pain is exhausting me.

I can't out-walk it, can't out-run it,

Pain is gaining you see.

When pain crosses the finish line,

the tears and screams I've not let out,

will no longer stay within me.

Chronic pain has a way of wearing you down. I suffered from it for a short while (luckily). This poem describes it well.

Pain is hard to deal with. My 15 years in the Army did my knees in. I must work. Take the joint medicine and I hope my old legs will make 20 more years. I do understand the poem. Thank you for sharing the excellent poem.
