Self-Perception

Self-Perception

A Poem by Barbara Walker

I perceive confidence, strength,

in command, take care of it all,

but I fear the truth

is an elderly woman,

who shrinks more every year,

who can't stand too long

or carry much weight,

who looks slightly drifty.

I kinda reminds me of the lost boys in Peter Pan, about the kid that never wanted to grow up. We all wish we could make time stand still, but what we would really be doing is slowing down evolution; the fact that we could evolve, grow, mature, and reach a certain level of achievement in God's eyes. Actually, now that I look at it, age isn't all that bad; it's actually the older people that are alot more wise, experienced, establighed, and accomplished. The only thing(s) I could think of that would make people hate getting older is the physical effects of aging and the feelings of vulnerability, weakness, dependence, and hopelessness. 1st of all... the media gives kids, teens, and adults alike, the image that being young is the best weapon against the world. We're all taught to be vain and shallow at an early age. It's just so pitiful to see that happen. Have you ever heard of the saying "don't judge a book by it's cover?" well, the same goes for people; you can't see the good qualities of a person just by looking at them, you can't see what their values and virtues are, you can't see what their capable of, and 1st impressions are planned, staged, rehearsed, and fakeouts anyways. The reall gold is deep inside the heart; beauty is just skin deep, true beauty reaches right through the soul.
Well, I hope I inspired you in one way or another; You should view my peom called Good Vs. Bad, it's pretty cool. Have a good day/night, whatever the timezone may be.
Sincerely,
Serenedy. :)

I love the concept behind this poem, though i think you need to exploit imagery more. What does the young self look like in comparison to the old? What is the old womans skin like, her eyes? There is so much you can say without really saying it. How is this person confident? is it in her manner? If they is young, then what other crutches of youth would they have? I like where you are going with this, there is a lot of potential. Keep it up =)

self perception" one can read your words and percieve the notion of self awareness,
in way of outlook and faith, and how the body and mind can be at oposite ands of the spectrum
and still be in balance, in way of understanding limits, and coming to terms, identifying
perception in general, your words definitely draw the heart to ponder, very nicely done.

Believe me even though aging has both its positive and not so positive side, effects attached to the latter's has in time been the subject of discussion in all fields of life..but what one should always be aware of is-as characteristics of living things we will have to grow and the concept of growth can best be depicted on the background of aging (as the physiological as well as the morphological characteristics change with time).
However as complex living things(humans), growth (aging in this concept) comes with it the vision as well as the frame work for the continuity of society...REASONING, WISDOM,CHARACTER and so on are all traits which only get better with time........bottom line is, AGING EVEN THOUGH IS A SIGN OF WHAT I TERM "GETTING TIRED ON THE STAGE OF THE PLAY OF LIFE" seeing african children die of diseases, of hunger and poverty only makes one as an adult appreciate life lived to aged stage.
Nice write, as short as it is it makes one think deep.

Hmmmm yes it can be scary to think about getting old. I try not to dwell on the negative aspects, I mean we will have to deal with it when the time comes right? well thats if the time does come, just dont know whats around the next corner....

Good poem.
