Lost

Lost

A Poem by Haley Lynn Thomas

Have you ever lost something?

A little piece of yourself

You can’t retrieve it

You know it’s gone for good

Did you take it for granted?

And realized far too late

Just how much it meant to you

And how much you needed it

But you don’t belong there anymore

Your place amongst them has been filled

They’ve all forgotten your name

They don’t remember who you are

It’s like finishing the final sentence

Of the greatest book you’ve ever read

Only this time you can reread it

You can’t do it over again

Now you feel like a stranger

Maybe even to yourself

Because it’s like some part of you

Is dead and has been buried

You promised yourself you wouldn’t cry

That you’ll be stronger this time

But you feel just like a child

Who’s misplaced her favorite toy

Because I lost something

A little piece of myself

I took it for granted

And now it’s gone for good
