Travelling By Night

Travelling By Night

A Poem by E Chadwick
"

A poem based on the Mothman sightings.

"

You are driving

Down an unfamiliar road

In an unfamiliar area

In the dead of night.

Above you, a barren night sky

In front of you, an empty street

To your sides, dark forests stretching

As far as the eye can see.

But behind you?

You don’t want to know.

A glint of red

In your rear view mirror.

Curiosity forces you to look.

You see two bright red circles

In the darkness.

Eyes

Wide and unblinking.

Sheer terror washes over you

And you speed away

Trying to distance yourself

From that thing.

An ear-splitting screech pierces the night

And a large mass drops to the ground in front of you

Forcing you to skid to a stop.

You gape at your pursuer

With its hulking body

And massive wings

It’s eyes staring right through you.

With a single flap of its wings

The creature ascends

Into the night sky

Leaving you to stare

At the spot where it once stood.

Ooo, I like this one. Reminds me of the long nights spent speeding down dark highways wondering what might be in the dark. Excellent job!
