When We Were Together

When We Were Together

A Poem by idiotproof--1

over the horizon sunsets shine you lie

I'm sober enough to know the truth you hide

I kindled your fire so you would shine like a beacon

chasing hopes we used to have

and dreams we never knew

walking past the doors we never wet through

because we were cowards

too scared to face ourselves

we knew only bliss and happiness

then you taught me hate

showed me anger

made me feel despair

all the nights that you weren't there

I cried myself to sleep enough times to drown you in the tears

but I no longer feel my fears

I learned to face them when you let me go

fighting shadows all alone

but I've come back

and I'm not like you

I'll hold your hand while you experience

all I went through

"but I've come back
and I'm not like you
I'll hold your hand while you experience
all I went through"
So selfless this would be if it really happens. But that does not happen often.
Heart-touching read..

This poem is interesting in the way that the speaker's attitude is somewhat hard to pinpoint. The tone seems bitter in places when speaking about the pain that the speaker underwent, but then come the final four lines, in which the speaker promises to help the other person through this experience. This part seems strangely kind and compassionate compared to the previous lines. Quite thought-provoking. Nice work!
