What of Dreams

What of Dreams

A Poem by MCS

To wake from a dream

and lie so still

afraid to move

to breathe

What does it mean

to dream of marshes

long black coats

and icy waters

To dream of tall cattails

tangles of grasses

gusts of dusty air

too thick to inhale

Seeing one’s self

submerged in dark waters

with reeds pushing

through decaying flesh

To crawl out of the dark water

collapsing on muddy banks

snakes writhing over your face

leaving behind unreadable script

The cold icy water

now a current

running through me

bringing a numbing chill

To believe your name

is called straining to listen

hearing nothing

but one’s ragged breathing
