Summer of Fun

Summer of Fun

A Poem by MCS

Excited voices, loud cheers

chain link fencing, rusted in spots

soft leather gloves, hardwood bats

a white diamond etched into scorching asphalt

Excited voices, loud cheers

kids casting shadows in the hard noon light

white softball traveling across a vast hot square

runners gaining speed aiming for home

Excited voices, loud cheers

cool water sloshing out of battered jugs

rivulets running down dirty chins

adding moisture to already wet tees

Excited voices, loud cheers

runs are accumulated, walks will due

outs are contested, foul balls are booed

rules are argued

Excited voices, loud cheers

cracking sounds of hits

thudding sound of catches

cheers, boos but laughter a constant

Excited voices, loud cheers

heat and running tiring business

kids turn homeward tired and dirty

this day ends with joy and awe

Excited voices, loud cheers
