Raven black days

The winter of our discontent

Will we remember those now gone

Evening tumbles into day

Days are spent in avoiding others

Or at least they should be

The new lexicon

Containing terms like

Social distancing, six feet apart, handwashing and masking

Raven black days

Winter of our discontent

Tallying up our dead

Long nights followed by long days

Storm clouds loom overhead

In this winter of sorrow and loss

Wow, what a powerful piece that leaves one feeling exactly as this reads. It's such a period piece for this crazy moment that we are in and captures the aloneness that is quarantining for months on end. Good job!

Your poem does a great job of helping a reader feel the meaningless emptiness that I feel inside when I try to grasp the "new normal" that's "out there" . . . beyond my own wilderness existence. I felt many of the ways you describe in your poem, years before covid became a problem & this is part of how I came to be a wilderness loner. While most people are still struggling thru stages of missing their old lives & they can't get used to this new normal, I've had 10 years to learn how much better solitude can be, compared to whatever's "out there" for the taking in my own particular set of circumstances (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Two pandemics . . . an undeniable concept that deserves a poem all its own!

Well Margie, I've done just that. I just posted Pandemic 1 & 2.
this has been a spring, summer, fall and now winter of discontent and loss...
so unnecessary...if only the approach had been different.
The tally would be so much less...And the ravens not be like a murder of large crows.
intense and true, this write. Yes, Poe comes to mind and heart.

Somber stuff here. Reminds me of Poe. Sadly, it's not fiction.
