In Once Aqueous Common Sense

In Once Aqueous Common Sense

A Poem by joshua sky

1

I look above myself, upon the grey ceiling,

A grey so bold,

So very cold.

‘Tis the roof of a nation’s tomb.

I myself am a fixture of the wall,

A carving, as it were

My hands and feet are bound, my mouth

Is shut,

Speech no more passing across my lips.

I desperately want to cry forth and let it

Be known the undermining evils

Contributing new stone

To this most disgraceful of sepulchers

Alas, though, my freedom is gone.

In the name of Tolerance, my freedom

Is gone.

In the name of Security, my freedom

Is ruined.

In the name of Progress, my freedom

Is dead.

(That is to say whatever freedom I may have ever had)

I’ve been etched into stone that

Once was aqueous common sense

Which flowed liberally and bathed

My country in comfort refreshing.

Then came the hardening winds of Stupidity

Starting as a breeze, blowing into a gale.

As a people, a nation, having weathered many

Storms of the past, we stood powerless against

Such force.

2

How does the deer contend with the

Wolf pack?

How does the gnu outwit the

Lioness?

How could a lethargic republic fend off

The political jackals that would

Render its very foundations unstable?

On 9-11-2001 a nation cried out to

Her God.

She lamented in unity,

E Pluribus Unum,

For the first time in many years.

The jackals were circling, however.

Licking their chops and waiting

Waiting to leap upon this injured giantess.

Those foul creatures embracing the ideals

Of men like Marx, Buckley, and Lenin and Limbaugh

Transfused bitterness to this land with their

Tyrannical ardor.

3

Before I found myself bound

In this mausoleum back when

Liberty was revered

I beheld foreshadowings of my

Current plight.  I witnessed laws

Passed with their rules and

Regulations accompanying

Shrouded with all vagueness

In mists called Progress,

Tolerance, and Security.  If the

Wisdom of such acts were questioned

By open-ey’d and sharp-minded

Citizenry, then those good citizens

Were ostracized…slandered…imprisoned.

Behold now this epitaphThe final

Exclamation of an American citizen

Forever encased in what was once

Aqueous common sense:

Do not let go of Liberty!

Forever oppose Tyranny!

Forever trust in God Almighty!

(Psalm 91)

Compelling read, the first was my favorite...much food for thought in this poetically classic piece. Never an easy subject to broach, you did an amazing job here, well done.

I concur, and it was my pleasure joshua...
Some day...the strong..the patriot will stand and say.."Draw your swords gentlemen..or wear your chains"
Very good...I've got your back.
