Nothing Personal

Nothing Personal

A Poem by Jessica Samuelsen
"

This is a writing exercise I did with Amanda Faulkner. We incorporated the quote from William Blake "It is easier to forgive an enemy than to forgive a friend."

"
You were my family my blood
our blood, that spills upon your precious floor.
It is the poison of your weapon,
that concerns me more then the wound
The blade of a stranger
does not carry a toxin like yours.
Your infliction is nothing personal,
and that make's it the most personal of all.
Mother, it is easier to forgive an enemy,
then it is to forgive a friend.
Forgiving is not forgetting
Though it's inconceivable
For my own humanity,
I will forgive you all the same.

Hauntingly beautiful, Jess. I feel your pain and know that you will survive your past. You've made a new and loving family...no toxins allowed!

This is really very intensely personal and you've made the reader feel it deeply. The feelings of betrayal and hurt are palpable in your words, perfectly defining your quote. Beautifully done, Jessica!

(Should that first line be You "were" my family?)

Excellent work. I feel this. Betrayal by ones who are trusted definitely cuts deepest. Forgiveness rocks! Ironically I just wrote a tale of forgiveness.
