Years

A Poem by Julie McCarthy (juliespenhere)

Years.

The days turned into pebbles
We kicked away on the rivers edge

The hours turned into years
Sand between our toes where did it go ?

The minutes were tiny stars
Shining bright we held them in our minds eye

The seconds were long
And never lasted

Long ago I knew you once
I remember that star

Yesterday I was young
laughed at all the time in a day

Could we have known
How quick the seconds went
No !

It’s better this way

Life is a rainbow of colours
Same day different colour

Now that you have gone
I wish
I wish
I’d spent an extra long day
With you

Regrets
Rain down my cheek
And stars always made me dizzy
I look up
I see you

Twinkle winking

Was that you ?

Yes I’d know your smile from all the other twinkles
A thousand million others
Don’t laugh like you

Thanks for the seconds
The hours
The minutes
The days were numbered
We never knew

Twinkle ⭐️ my friend
Shine like a star

Deeply touching and tenderly sad. The pain is open and reaching here. It grasps at hope in the wide night sky; in a universe invisible to the light of day, but always there. And finds comfort in a star. Beautiful. I'm sorry for your loss. F.

Amazing how we all seem to share experiences and discover that in the poetry we are writing. I liked your metaphor stars as minutes. The whole time theme that runs through this is great! Your mix of rhyme and free verse come together smoothly I hope writing is as healing for you as it can be for me. And reading. I just decided after 2 of your poems I really like your style!!

Thanks so much appreciate
those stars shine down and remind us of those we lost, and remind us they are still shining long after death.
I am so sorry for your loss, Julie.

Thanks Jacob yes hard losing friends good ones and family thanks 🙏
All of us tend to take our days for granted, especially when we are young. The speaker here is mulling over something very like that, remembering past times with someone who appears to have departed this plane. There are regrets here, but such do little but make us sadder. Better to dwell on the sweet moments, for in truth, how could we have known what was to come to pass?

A beautiful, poetic piece full of love for your dear friend who seemed to bring you so much joy. So, so sorry for your loss. You created an absolutely gorgeous, passionate piece and the love is so obvious here and how much your friend meant to you. Thank you so much for sharing such a vulnerable piece. Please take care of yourself, friend. (:
