A Poem by Thomas Fitzgerald
"

A piece to my darling home.

"

Wexford my darling home and mother,

Slight hand lays still on the water,

Clever quips never far from away,

Dear saints settle close to altar.

Wicklow our country's garden,

Mountain tops high and never seen,

Clouds roll in to member of all,

One man alone stand has been.

Dublin our capital the big smoke,

Traffic and people swell in time,

History carved the wrinkles here,

Now new and cultured by poets rhyme.

Louth the little brother we all love,

A border in more sense than one,

Teaching others of times gone by,

Oh lovers we have found the con.

Monaghan the stark and wanted land,

Mullyash a force of nature to command,

To men ride out on pony's we see,

Never wars to be won just battle demand.

Cavan our wondrous temperament,

Plagued in history to end it's ken,

Never fear for the fighting Irish are there,

Stopping giants with pride and men.

Leitrim a feverish stake at growth,

A place full of hardened metals,

Iron grows under mud and grasses,

Flee none of those others petals.

Donegal has wonders in secret pockets,

Fever grips the nation at last,

Men praised with freedom on the county,

Catering all who come looking cast.

Sligo formed after a nine years war,

A famous son in Yeats from here,

Beauty comes easy to these few,

Take a tour of the green peer.

Mayo the home of he yew tree,

Battered on costs with high wind,

A strong farm to hold the crop,

Slight emotion we find has sinned.

Galway a heritage all it's own,

A beacon for lost language and thought,

A city that never sleeps on this side,

Will we ever gain our patriot fought.

Clare the holder of our longest river,

Countryside and barrier holds still,

Religion gains fortune within their people,

Take flight and land here for kill.

Limerick the fight was brought to them,

Independence reigned heavy,

Fighting back we won and snatched,

Our rights in this large levy.

Kerry the ultimate kingdom insight,

The goat stands tall on harrowed hill,

Festive lights dance forever moonlight,

Terrible trance grabs you to fill.

Cork the daddy of them all we trust,

An accent so slight in sings in talk,

Intimate company spreads far and wide,

Most often a pint is had by the hawk.

Waterford the gateways to a mystery,

Ships pass in the day and the night,

Walking boards always near to the front,

Schools flourish at all with pierced kite.

Kilkenny is magic in stone and emerald,

Hurling at the base in human emotion,

Capital of all that sings of self praise,

A troll keeps falsehoods in earth and revocation.

Tipperary the two counties in one,

Our saints all travelled through here,

A sign of things to come everlasting,

No coast to be found within gear.

Carlow has science to praise it so,

John gave meaning to the blue sky,

May we have coffee here that's questioned,

Excellence will be flat on grained rye.

Laois the wife to the Norman Strongbow,

Captive in times of battles now forgotten,

Myth and fields are in equal measure,

Sainted houses built far and now rotten.

Kildare the fair flatland on foothills,

Breathing air into Irelands mouth,

Stare hard and find peace on pews,

Play nicely and get rewarded south.

Offaly home to the nations abbey,

The high cross places strong scene,

Feelings may hurt for all those born,

Hidden smarts are clever and keen.

Meath always known the royal county,

Strong and forever  a new face,

Seated on thrones of amber and grass,

Ladies gather moss at this very place.

Longford the gateway to all farming,

Men bask in sounds of the river rush,

Space separated and plotted forth,

Now sit and eat from raspberry bush.

Roscommon the centre of speaking truth,

Hyde born of the womb in scholar,

Spelling out sound advice and member,

Now nipped about the reign and collar.

Westmeath the fighting spirit and love,

John Joe brandished the last punch,

Take heed to remember your step,

Slight hand in poker in time for lunch.

A amazing poem. I was down and out once when I was stationed in Germany. I took a week vacation and spend time in Ireland. I wasn't depress after I met lively and good people. One of my best times in my life. Roaming the cities and countryside. I like the description. Brought back good places and memories. Thank you for sharing the outstanding poetry.

Now I realize even more than ever why my American Irish friends love their heritage so much. I wish someone would write a poem about my ancestral home, Holland from whence my people came long ago (along with pretty Irish girls too) to become brave American frontiersmen.

Thank you Christian.
Wow. This is a comprehensive piece, that makes me want to look everything up. I should do one like this about Canada - I am not as ambitious as you, I am afraid.
