Going Against The Grain

Going Against The Grain

A Poem by Olive Belikov

I see not why the world must be this way.

Why hands hold guns and people run away.

Why do we fight

kill

yell

and beat?

Why do we not see deceit

in the way we walk, talk, and flock

like lifeless drones;

doing what we're told to do

and nothing else.

Never do we stray;

never see the new day

or dance on the morning bay,

letting all else give way.

I'd give anything to snap my fingers in your face and say

"Wake up you vacant fool,

you're about to drown in a waterless pool."

But you walk on

like everyone else

step by step

into a herd of hate

with only me to compensate

as I alone

go

against

the grain.

Changing the format is a good way to give the work more "bite" ... the last three lines DID emphasize change!

this is really great. i loved the message and the statement you chose to express the message through.

"as I alone go against the grain"

very nicely done :)

I like it.

"Wake up you vacant fool,
you're about to drown in a waterless pool."

Great lines.

I am okay with it all by now. I try to change what little I can. One mind at a time.

a good lesson I've learned is, "He (or she) who fights with monsters take care, lest he/she becomes a monster themselves. The masses will always be right to the masses. We can't tell people how to live, showing can be more effective. Grace.
