Listen (Music)

Listen (Music)

A Poem by Kristopher Ross Koehler
"

Music has always been a big deal to me. I wanted to reflect on that by playing random songs in my iTunes while I wrote this poem, then stopping the music and listening to everything around me.

"
Riffs and hits pound to the beat of my heart.
The drums kick me in the ears from the start.
A guttural scream cries forth in agony.
All this "noise" sounds so perfect to me.

Inside all the noise pollution,
I hear nothing but rhythm.
My foot taps along to the kick of the bass,
And I get a taste of freedom.

As the music fades and the rhythm retreats,
I find that I'm left in awe when it all comes to cease.

Offbeat instruments make my neck bob in strange ways.
It looks funny to you,
But it is how I let my body sing the song that plays.

Female vocals masked by heavy riffs.
They tickle my spine as my body lists.

The twang of a steel guitar comes in to tune,
And a country stars sings about having a few beers,
Under the dimly lit moon.

Clean guitar with a bass-tastic background,
You can't help but bang your head,
When the chorus comes back round.

With another click of the mouse,
I'm sitting in a symphony hall.
The cello and bass wooed me to sleep,
If I do recall.
The violin and winds breathe out a sweet melody,
Every instrument is in tune,
And blending in perfect harmony.

Provocative lyrics and a comedian vocalist at the helm,
I don't mind it at all,
But to some it'll overwhelm.

Rap beats hit you hard in the chest,
They put rhymes and rhythms to a surefire test.
Testing the limits of what we know to be possible,
This artist is pulling out everything he has in his verbal arsenal.
My subwoofer struggles to hang tight with the bass,
I can feel and hear this rapper getting up in someone's face!

I hit the square button and the music stops.
But I still find music even when the beat drops.

The hum of my fan,
The beat of a distant hammer.
Everything has a rhythm,
In some way, shape, or manner.
Sometimes all you have to do is listen,
To everything around.
And the music,
You will find,
Will quickly surround.

Kristopher Ross Koehler
Think about how difficult it must be to create poetry based solely on what you're hearing at that moment. That is how I did this. That said, some of the rhymes may not be exactly... coherent. I am open to any and all critiques, but just don't be mean.

As you said what you just did is difficult. I believe its amazing how much detail you gathered just from what you could hear and express it in such an artistic manner. Well written.
