such great heights

such great heights

A Poem by Laura

"I'm in love with you."

A drunkenly slurred sentence,
sputtered from behind your knotted tongue
left me wondering if you let it untangle itself,
unfolding and adjusting
allowing yourself to get used to the words as they fell from your grasp
or if you wanted to reel them back in before they could creep through my skin

I know I should expect less of you
your bloodshot eyes,
all too familiar, pour heavily into my own
Slowly, I see less remnants of you
as they retreat into faded spaces of your mind
leaves me questioning if I will soon sink into that crowded corner myself

The words you said dripped like acid and seeped through the cracks
of the wall I so desperately want to keep up.
What I've done, you've done first, and many times more
The walls I hide behind, you walk through
and so I let you in, finally,
scared and shaken, curious for the mischief you will bring

No phrase breaks down our 'Berlin Walls' like those 3 words Laura - they are also a kind of ultimatum in a way, we fear not responding to them for fear that we will be left alone.
The trepidation behind accepting the words is well conveyed in the final line
I enjoyed this poem

Great piece. The ending works so well that I want to hear about the mischief now...bob

It's not easy to break down the walls especially after being hurt. However, often it is worth it. The imagery throughout the poem is excellent, but this was my favorite image, "your eyes acting as my candles"...WOW! Another great write. Lydi**
