A friend's demise

A friend's demise

A Poem by Donald Meikle

Dozing off in early mornshine
Empty mug in curl locked finger
Oblivious to all but peace
Slipping into sweet release
Today a distant friend is dying
His son's flown down for comfort
As the doctor pulls the plug
Wife and son will kiss and hug
It's time to pour a second cup
and watch the day arise
with thankful sleepy eyes

OH Donald, I am so sorry about your final loss, it is so tragical because it is so final. you wrote a wonderful tribute to this friendship, all was a silent dignity.

oh I don't know who or where... so I can only comment on the poem but you see this is perhaps the sort of poem that first drew me to your work. It is like you are a wonderful old sage who wanders around thinking and speaking his life in rhyme. I wish I was so eloquent. Of course as I have read more of your work, I have come to appreciate the poems which you obviously craft with exceptional care maybe with a burning subject in mind... there really is no distinguishing between them... these poignant snapshots are wonderful.

This is very touching. So sad. Nicely done. So sorry for your loss.

I heard of this from Devin [Charles Fuller]. I didn't know him, but the loss of another poet . . . ah Donald, I'm so sorry.
