The sugar next to my coffee

The sugar next to my coffee

A Poem by Louisa Chan

A deep purple secret packet

Sitting close to my bitter dark coffee

However tempting to unveil such comforting sweetness

I choose to keep it intact and undisclosed

You walk close toward an ordinary me

Like sweet grains glittering gold and legend

My shell soft and warm and unpretending

Struggles to resist your pleasant allure

Best unknown your true self and stories

Kept closed from such a close distance

Still a secret packet never open

Leaning sweetly against my finished coffee

I like the delicate metaphor or symbolism expressed here. No sugar for me. I like my coffee strong and black but never bitter. I do not like bitter coffee. I add a half pinch of salt to the coffee before I perk it to take the bitterness out. It works too. Just don't over salt.

Cleverly thought, finely written... you have given that wee packet a character; made it real, almost intriguing; part friendly, part a 'naughty'. Clever you, very imaginative writing, Louisa. Will of course, read more of your poems, pretty sure they will be as good a the ones I've already read. Have a happy Sunday.
