Waffles

Waffles

A Poem by Lakshmi Ramesh

You were my waffle once
Comforting, sweet, fulfilling and hot
Sometimes you were dipped in honey and we're the sweetest thing I could have had
And sometimes you were just a plain old waffle that I was familiar and safe with
But mostly you were hot
Oh so hot
You always burnt me
But I always considered it the nice kind of hot
The kind that burnt but tasted of maple syrup and whipped cream and strawberries
But I see it now
I see now that my plate is empty that all you left me with was a burnt tongue
A burnt tongue incapable of tasting anyone like I tasted you
