i’m some awesome kind of dude

if you really want to know

some cats like me say they’re fierce

they call themselves a beast

‘cause that’s what others say

you just don’t know enough

‘bout a man like me

for your opinion about me to count

‘bout me? you just don’t know

enough to turn my head

when you go ‘hey,’

‘killer’

‘big popa’

‘slim goody’

‘cool daddy’

like i just stepped off

a page of a GQ magazine

or in a Marvel  comic book

or the stage of some Shakespearen comedy

not a clown; the world's just my stage

but superheroes are for kids

and for those who don’t know

like i know and you don’t

my mirror will tell you all

if you really want to know …

see that wrinkle?  that’s fatigue

and that scar?  it’s eternal pain

dark careworn eyes show heartbreak

slight trembling lip … that’s fear

am i still fierce?

am i a beast?

after you see all those things?

well, i don’t, none of it do i see,

just an awesome, awesome dude

and that’s what does it;

it's the one and only reason

why i’m so damned awesome

like i said, i'm just awesome

I love the irony in this - the great swirling spirals and hollows. That sense in ourselves changes by the minute, doesn't it? And it's a mix of everything and all of it.
