playing for keeps

playing for keeps

A Poem by mercy party

lately you've been like a disappearing Hollywood starlet
a story that seemed to have no end until now
God knows i tried to guard and guide you
but i was blind to
your youthful illusions
you say you're playing for keeps
so why are you hitting the streets
you're playing for keeps
so why are you hitting the streets
if you're playing for keeps
and i see what looks like someone running away
the closer i get i start to see that it's just me
it was never us and i'm damn sure it was never you
so what are you trying to do?
you say you're playing for keeps
so why are you hitting the streets
you're playing for keeps
so why you hitting the streets
if you're playing for keeps
someday someone will tell it like it is
until then you'll be getting fooled again
the complacency of a generation
a generation of woes

A quality over quantity poem with just the right amount of repetition that adds more meaning to this poem.

The first stanza is well-written and I like the mention of "Hollywood Starlet", making it seem like she's from the 1940's or 1950's.

Nice poem, Mercy! :)

Had to read this again! This time as a song... the chorus kicked a*s and the words ring true for calling someone out on being shady and restless...

Very nice and enjoyable read. It has great use of emphasis to drive the point home. I feel like the ending changes the tone of the entire poem. thanks for posting

Some people don't know what they want. They one thing and mean another or do another which totally conflicts with their stated aims and views.
Imagine how a flower would feel if a butterfly landed and then decided not to spread the pollen because it was in it's mind not a lowly butterfly but a fecking eagle !!

I could see 'The streets' singing this one M.P.
Very cool conclusion.

Hits hard MP, especially the repeating verse.
Does feel a tad tragic. Good one.
