Defeat is (Not) Sweet

Defeat is (Not) Sweet

A Poem by nadia dmitri
"

Ignis fatuus

"

Defeat is not sweet

That perfumed venom, ignis fatuus

Little girl, don’t give in

Anguish is not the path to nobility

Blood is just as ruby, tears are just as crystal

No matter how often they shed

There is no diamond worth a lifetime of caves

Darkness has no silver linings

But I understand, I do, and perhaps my words will not break through, honestly I do not expect them to

It is hard to not try to find beauty in what is around you

Something to stick around for

Sometimes all you can reach is the pain

Sometimes all you can do is suffer

You tell yourself it is what you were made for

That you deserve this torture

You feel you must either be a monster or a victim

And pity is easier than forgiveness

Down to your bone, down to your marrow

You’re convinced your purpose it to ache

That it is meant to be

Defeat is sweet when you have tasted nothing else

And your locked jaw won’t let anything else in

I likely cannot convince you to feel otherwise, how could I? I cannot even convince myself

I agree Nadia.
"Defeat is sweet when you have tasted nothing else
And your locked jaw won’t let anything else in "
The above lines. Honest and true. Thank you for sharing the amazing poetry.

Thank you for your kind words :)
Your use of language is powerful, more than descriptive, colourful, both academic and metaphorical. whenever I leave a review box having read a poem, to be truthful, 'am in awe:
"Blood is just as ruby, tears are just as crystal " Who could have come up with such a plausible phrase but - you!

In spite of certain phrases, you appear to fight for a life and all its guises, then - pick an outlook, emotion, attitude or whatever and try desperately to fit the flaws within the essence that is nadia - and that in spite of your final words.

This stands proud.. ' It is hard to not try to find beauty in what is around you - Something to stick around for - Sometimes

What a thoughtful and kind review!!! Thank you so much for reading :)
This is full of great images and metaphors. "That perfumed venom, ignis fatuus" "Blood is just as ruby, tears are just as crystal " Some of the lines are deep and worth remembering
"There is no diamond worth a lifetime of caves
Darkness has no silver linings "
Great lines. and they are broken by a single line of rhyme that echoes like a bell
"But I understand, I do, and perhaps my words will not break through, honestly I do not expect them to "
Another great line"And pity is easier than forgiveness" and this seems reflected in the last line of the poem. This is one I will remember for some time.

I like the reference. The Acadians call the "feu follet", as they, say a "wisp" of light over the swamps at night but yes, something ethereal and fleeting but not all is swamp gas, parlor magic and mirrors. To believe in others we must first believe in ourselves and to believe in ourselves we must not only trust ourselves but work to achieve the desired outcome in our endeavors. Faith grows in confidence. I enjoyed your write. We may get defeated in life many times. That's not important. It's only important that we keep rising up to the challenges of our character.
