A Corrupting Sin

A Corrupting Sin

A Poem by Mason Watts

It drives hate, wars, and fake love,

It lies, kills, and fights

For things so pointless to me.

It intrudes on peoples lives

Making them hate, love and kill.

It’s a w***e that lives to find

The things that bind us so,

It looks for an excuse

To make us cry.

It goes for our weakness

To bring us down.

It causes most of our sin

Creeping in so slow

We don’t even see

How corrupt it is

How much it hurts us

And how hard we work for it.

Do you know what this thing is?

Do you know the w***e, the thief, the murderer,

The hater, the liar,

Do you know this thing that corrupts the soul?

Do you know the thing that comes in so slow?

Can you guess at this thing?

Why its money, don’t you see,

That comes in so slow.

It’s the w***e, the thief, the murderer,

The hater, the liar,

Its all of those things that corrupt our soul.

Money intrudes the soul

So easily, and slow.

This sin we find we love and we keep.

We put it in safes and our pockets

To keep for ourselves,

And we don’t even see

The death that it sells.

Do you horde this sin? Do you keep it for yourself?

Do you have it in your pockets, to make things go your way?

Don’t you see those on the streets,

The ones in boxes and no food to eat.

They deserve it more than most of you.

They have worked and bled

And yet, you see, these men will be dead.

You say, “Good riddance” to the deaths of these men.

But when you die there will be no sorrow for your soul.

The people will hate the things you’ve done

When you horde your money.

They’ll spit in your grave and curse at your soul.

They don’t like you for who you are

But for the money that you hold.

They know that you are wrong, with the things you’ve done

But they know that you have one thing they want.

You may have money but you won’t have a soul

That will be cared about once you’ve died,

They won’t pray for you, or care about your grave

They will hate being at the funeral

When they could be drinking in praise.

Now my story is done,

Of the money that kills.

You see you gain nothing

When you horde that money so.

It is only a sin, don’t you see

That will corrupt your soul.
