You Can't Just Start Over

You think just because you came back it's all better

You can just walk back into my life and it will be the same

Like nothing you said or did ever happened

Well the heart might not remember but the mind never forgets

All the times you said I love you when they didn't mean a thing

All the times you said you were sorry but had your fingers crossed

You think just because you say you've changed that it makes it okay

Like I am supposed to roll over and forget everything

You can't just start over

You can't just make all the hurt go away

You can't just tell me goodbye

Then try to say hello again

You left me here all alone

All I had was your shoe prints

The bruises you left on my heart

All your angry words still in my ear

You think just because you said it won't happen again makes it fine

You think that for now being perfect is just going to smooth things over

Well you have an another thing coming

This is the reality check of you life baby

You can't just start over

Either you are with me or you're not

You can't just come and go as you please

You can't have my heart just to keep smashing it

Love! Love! Love! What a powerful message, full of specific instances to show the reader how this happens between two people . . . and we all know how often it can happen! I am so 100% in agreement with your message & it's not just about lovers in a relationship. I feel this way about my family, who deserted me in my darkest years. They were all clustered around when times were good, tho. Your poem has such a distinct message that resonates with my heart. I'm never ever ever opening that door again. People who dropped me like a hot potato can never ever come back to eat a fully-loaded potato with me again! Love this.
