Escape Proof

Escape Proof

A Poem by MandaBear
"

I used the seven deadly sins and Aristotle's quote : All human actions have one or more of these seven causes: chance, nature, compulsions, habit, reason, passion, desire. and made it into a poem.

"
Nothing but an empty cell,
And whole a lot of time to think.
What by chance got you there?
Well, lets say your greed got the best of you.

The nature of the crime is to gruesome to tell.
But I will say you will be paying for a while.
Life with out the possibility of parole.
You and the sloth have a lot in common.

Waiting around for the next bed check.
Playing with cards the guards let you have.
The silence is compelling you to want to scream.
Anger is building up inside you.

Now more in tune with the habits of the guards,
You start to plot to escape from your prison.
Gluttony has now got the best of you.
Wanting freedom has consumed your every thought.

Everyday you plan and get little things to aid in your escape.
But you are careful not to leave any traces of your plan.
For the simple reason of not getting caught.
You are taking pride in your secrecy.

Making their rounds for the night
The guards check every cell and every prisoner.
Your passion for running away is ever greater.
Lusting for the wind in your hair and a decent meal.

The time has come to do the deed.
You wait for the nightly check to be over.
Then your desires come to life.
Oh the envy the others will have you think to your self.

Crawling through a whole you made while no one was looking.
You make your grand escape and leap over the walls and down the side.
In the dead of night you get on your man made raft and drift away.
To this day the guards don't know if you survived or not.

I guess Alcatraz wasn't as escape proof as they thought.....
                                                                                                            Signed,
                                                                                                                  The escapee

I remember hearing a story of a few escapees from Alcatraz. Not sure if it's all true, but I think it might be. It comes to mind after reading this. Nicely done.

I like the way you put the story in the poem together. Brought the reader into the tale. No place is escape proof. A strong ending to a excellent poem.
