Here Comes The Night

Here Comes The Night

A Poem by James Takeo Panton

Here comes the night, creeping
Across the valleys and plains and mountains
She glides velvety soft across my room, across the land
Like a lover, or ghost
She takes her black veil, and spreads across the land
The twinkling eyes that fill her skies
They stare down at me, smilingly shining
Guiding my way through the thickness
The world grows silent and deep and clean
The streetlamps hum with the memories
Of quiet summer nights and endless suburban lawns

Of scattered laughter in secret places, as we raced against the dawn

The ancient toy streets we sauntered down undisturbed
The passing prowling cruiser that stalks me

Does not halt but only hesitates as it glides along the empty asphalt ribbons

And fade away in distance with its angry red brake-lights stare back at me, menacingly

Lonesome cats and stray dogs that wander across my path rarely

Their eyes glowing at me briefly before disappearing into shadows

On unspoken errands of interest they fly to, without waiting
Plush green carpets covered in dew beneath my shoes
Cushioning my steps as I journey onward

Chirping insects mesmerize and hypnotize my ears with their songs

As they bat against lonely light bulbs on forgotten porches
There is no traffic, there are no people
No sounds, no stirrings
Only a silvery moon that hangs lonely in her skies
That looks down upon me, smiling sweetly
My only witness to all my deeds
The world has grown clean and quiet and softer
Cooler and calmer with the lengthening shadows
Time at a standstill, breath barely fogging
How many nights have there been like these?

When my efforts and errands lead me to these lonely hours and places

Sneaking across the city like a thief in the dark
On secret errands down narrow concrete paths
The moon as my companion
The stars as my guides
The empty dark windows, my silent spectators
The streetlamps, my hopeful beacons
Not a word do I utter
Not a sound do I speak
And I go on
Here comes the night……..
