Spaces

Spaces

A Poem by parker

You are my puzzle piece.
You fit me,
and you make me whole.

I knew that the first time I saw you,
when a little space in my heart
opened up to welcome you home.

That little space never closed.
Even after you left me,
even after my heart was broken.

I tried to fill that wound
with so many destructive things,
until finally I just learned
how to live with the ache.

I thought I saw something in your eyes
when I ran into you from time to time.
I thought I saw some sadness.
I thought I saw some memories.
But I silenced my heart from calling out to you,
and I tried again, unsuccessfully,
to forget how I fit into your arms.

And then you told me
that the way you treated me
was the biggest regret of your time here.
You told me that you never dared hope
that you might get a second chance.
You asked me not to leave so soon
because you wasted all those years not knowing me.

Now my head tells me to be wary.
My logical brain points to the memory
of you pushing me away before.
But a little space in my heart
sits open and waiting to welcome you home.
