![]() Small TalkA Poem by parker
I want you to talk to me,
and I really don't care what you talk about. I keep asking you questions and you're answering them, but you're not and you know it. I want you to speak with me, not just respond to my comments like a trained bird. I want you to tell me about your life, past, present, and future. I want you to talk about what you think of the world, and your place in it, and mine. I want you to say that my place in this world is by your side, but I know you won't and that's okay, I just want you to say something. Instead you talk to me without saying anything. You smile at me with a humor that never reaches your eyes. I want my phone to ring with your unexpected phone call. I want you to do the little things that make me smile involuntarily. I know that I'm assigning you a hard role to play, but if you're not interested in fulfilling my expectations of you, then it doesn't matter what they are. There are so many things that I don't understand and can't figure out on my own. I want you to be the answer to my problems, but I know you won't be and that's okay, I just want you to be here, and you are, but you're not and you know it.
