Highwayman

Highwayman

A Poem by Scott H.
"

I tend to find myself in my car more than anywhere else. So this is for Phyllis. A highwayman was also a lone, oft-outlaw rider of the past, making his way thru the night.

"

“Highwayman”

My car is my shelter
I shall not want
Long as I feel the pavement
Rolling under my wheels with
The radio playing loudly
As the yellow lines shine
In the lights of the semis
That keep their distance
From the shoulder
Like an honor guard.

But I am only royalty
In my own mind and
Of course in my car
As a robber knight or
Highwayman of old,
Making his way by
The lesser-traveled pathways
Under the secrecy of night,
Always moving on,
Always running.

This piece presents such an image of the road as home, but in the sense that it lashes out and hits you in the face. As you move through the work, the feeling creeps into you, as you feel yourself moving down the road.
