Missing Youth

Missing Youth

A Poem by Samuel Dickens
"

Have you seen it?

"

Have you seen my missing youth?

The one I've always had?

With no goodbye, it just went poof!

And fled like blowing sand

Just yesterday, or day before

I climbed the tallest trees

But now the steps to my front door

Cause creaking in my knees

All throughout this place called home

Someone goes to town

Sneaking in while I am gone

And moving things around

Is that mirror on the wall

Haunted by some geezer?

That’s not my face, after all

With eyebrows needing tweezers

I can hardly reach my toes

When trying, I abort

Some villain’s work, don't you know

That made my arm grow short!

I found your missing youth. It's in my baby daughter's eyes. It's just the cycle moving forward you understand, it's nothing personal...we have to grow old...die and leave our thoughts behind hoping someone will find them worthwhile. It's what poets and storytellers do. I think it's a better legacy than many...but children are our real legacy...inspire one and your life was not spent in vain.

Lol, to the poem AND your note! Had to read when I saw that darling fellow Magoo. This light and delightfully entertaining verse helped me to see the humor in growing older. Not so difficult to believe some of those things. I have misplaced something and vehemently insisted that someone moved it or hid it from me :D I really believed what I was saying!

I owed you one. I always keep records if I can't return the favor right away. Shared at Linkedin too!

True but inside we are all still 12 years old running around like mad :) This made me smile Samuel especially after hearing my knees crack when I got off my bicycle this afternoon :)

Absolutely delightful look at the aging process....and I can relate all too well. Loved the humor in this one and the rhyming was flawless. Lydi**

This is so clever, Sam - Sorry I haven't read you recently. I have a lot of catching up to do! I loved it, and it does creep up on us all, eventually!

Ha! So true, Sam. Guess we can only hope the mind never catches up with our bodies. Well done!

Thanks, Mic. Yes, our minds must never think old thoughts.
Clever with the write of this one...I felt as a reader in each stanza the struggles of the whole poem...you give us that effect in the lines...all the way to the finish...

My mirror has a stranger's face, too - something's up! This is an entertaining poem, Sam, playing whimsically with the reality of getting older. But, since I do insist on waking up each day, I will embrace whatever may come...
