My Grandmother's House

My Grandmother's House

A Chapter by Shawn Purcell
"

A song inspired by a dream...

"

I was walking in a dream,

Through my grandmother’s yard.

I could smell coffee

As I walked through the door.

She sat in the corner,

In the gunslingers chair.

How’ve you been doing?

I’m really glad you’re here.

“Do you take sugar?

I take it black.”

We sat and drank coffee

At my grandmother’s house.

Is there anyone special?

Or just friends she asked? She asked.

Then she told old stories

About when she was a girl.

As I walked through the hallway,

I remembered when I was a child.

She would call me to dinner

Then we would play outside.

She would share lessons.

We talked and we laughed,

As we sat on the steps of

My grandmother’s house

Then I saw a stranger.

It was a man.

It was my uncle

Standing out there.

Across the yard

With beige gloves in his hand.

I could tell he failed himself.

From his angry stare.

He wasn’t looking around.

He just waited there.

As I watched from the steps

Of my grandmother’s house
