Cross My Heart and Hope to Die

Cross My Heart and Hope to Die

A Poem by Laraine Davis

This is a previous version of Cross My Heart and Hope to Die.

I am pushed forward

Into the scary building

Kindergarten

I am alone

At the playground

Just swinging

Talking to myself

A voice clears itself

Slowly

My eyes look at the boy before me

Completely lost

In his smile

so

We become friends

Best friends

The promise is

Cross my heart and hope to die

And he promised

We would always be friends

And we were

Through fifth

And then

Middle school

All through the drama

The fights

Rumors

Lies

And all the rest

Thrown into the pot of

Life

Too soon

Before I knew it

There he was

My best friend

Pale

Weak

Eyes closed

Chest moving

Up

Down

Doctor walks in

Doesn't even bother

To look me in the eyes

My best friend

Is going to die

Soon

Too soon

My eyes were dried

My face was raw

The world was numb

My friend

My best friend

Had come and left

All too soon

I never even got the chance

To tell him

That I loved him

No

That I love him

And I always

Will

No matter

The size of the hole

In my heart
