A Mathematical Rhapsody

A Mathematical Rhapsody

A Poem by Raj Sahu
"

This poem shows the sentiments of a mathematician towards his lover in mathematical form.

"

I doubt; Can I live long rather?
As we both are parallel lines, which do not meet each other.

To understand you is a task very hard;
Before that, the problems of Mensuration I will regard.

Expressions of your face frequently deviates,
That the comprehension of sine and cosine alleviates.

Our only meeting of love made me disappoint.
It was like a tangent that meets a circle only at one point.

I promised you there that all your expenses I will afford.
As I am the diameter of my family circle, which is the longest chord.

My love towards you will truly suit.
It is a quadratic equation of real root.

In your friend circle, I was too your friend.
But I was like an Arithmetic Progression's term of the end.

Your deception make me full of sorrow,
My life becomes as a cylinder hollow.

In your love, I myself dangle.
I act as an unknown value of an angle.

In your life, I am one of the obstruction.
It seems to me that I am an endless construction.

I should really applaud this work of you for both of its parameters- unique and humorous. I am really startled how one can knit a poem, a poem of love, through the central theme- Mathematics. It is really an amazing work. Somewhere I find rhymes a little odd, but it's effect outshone by this amazing love comedy. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you. 😊
This was a very nice writing exercise and it is always good to see a poet testing their talents looking for new forms and formats to expand their skills. Many years ago when I taught poetry I suggest that every time you wrote a poem you make use of a now word that you had never used before. That not only increases your vocabulary but opens new poetry possibilities with every new word, something to consider. Bravo! Clap! Clap! Clap! Clap! Clap!

Yes, thanks once again. 😊
I must say... I love rhyme and that's why I enjoyed this but... I didn't understand a single thing. And I can't pretend and write a nice review on something that got me so confused. But I get that you had fun writing this so great work. :)

Wow...
Really creative writing and it's well written. I admire the concept. Undoubtedly one of your best.

"In your love, I myself dangle.
I act as an unknown value of an angle." Should be my best part of it.

Okay, the blunt critique first: the rhymes of verses 1 and 3 are clunky while the others are quite clever. Secondly, I feel that this should be slightly longer or shorter, as something about the length seems slightly awkward. Lastly, I noticed that most of the terms are geometric; perhaps varying the mathematical areas would make it more interesting.

And now the praise! I love the idea of expressing feelings about another person using terms from a discipline that is very concrete. It feels original and quite refreshing, and I love your metaphors; 'tangent meeting a circle at one point' and 'unknown value of angle' are my favorites. The meter has a lovely feel to it as well. Like most things, this just needs some editing and polish. Well done!

This was very interesting. I like how you tied in mathematical terms so well with your rhymes, and I think that ending set of lines was very powerful. "In your life, I am one of obstruction. It seems to me that I'm endless construction." Excellent.
