A New Instant

2016 carries newness to the far reaches of our mind; anticipation of future events is best left to fate, a (sometimes) cruel arbiter.

Newness is a virtue bestowed on

Sudden thoughts,

Multi-voiced like symphonic trumpets,

Voices branded sharply.

 

Some are solely eloquent while others,

Oddly muted; each is dually

Enamored of the other,

A twisted pair.

 

Can newness be conferred on instants

Blended, packaged in a year?

A virgin timeframe unencumbered by such

Numbing fear?

 

Voices merged like massive choirs,

Wond’ring why they can’t

Convince each other how to handle each

Mysterious instant.

Suffering is a story we replay over and over in our minds. Even though it's in the past it continues to influence our choices. Years of pain can make new beginnings, well, a lot less exciting. If only we could always wake up in the now, never behind, never before. No pain and no fear...that would be a great new year resolution :)

My sister thinks it's funny how people think things are going to change just because it's a new year. For me, a new year symbolizes an opportunity to focus our minds in and really accomplish what we want. A new year gives us a reference point... in 2016 I decided I was going to.... and I did it! A fresh start for all of us my friend :)

The concept I was trying for was convincing the reader that each instant is new, not just each year labeled as such. So newness is always one split second away. Your observations about 2016 are very good, I understand your take on the New Year. By the way, have a GREAT 2016! take care...dan

we can move forward if we have the guts...embracing each mysterious instant....but it's harder in older age to do that...we become somewhat cynical...tainted...and the reckless abandon leaves our spirit.

I like your concept of newness Dan. New possibilities, triggered by a symbolic change from 15 to 16...a virgin timeframe...in which we feel we get a chance...even a catalyst to change who we are.

Moments is all we have...instants as you call it. You realize this well in your poem.
