Niagara Falls       by Sami Khalil

A modern Shakespearean sonnet…

Mark this waterfall good and impress well

For I dare speak of downstream profusions

Cascading burnished time-weathered swell

With lavish spirits come forth effusions.

I stand twice awed, in missing person’s case

Escaping like a whole image for once

Somewhere along your riverbeds a place

Courting domiciles in starlit, shrined sconce.

Out of the brink, jubilant throngs converge

To seek new paths and the haunted stretch down

Rolling away static lives when waves surge

When to depart, we must all wear the crown.

How great and joyous the pathless passions

At every rise and fall, faiths find tractions.

Sami, when I was a kid, my parents took my sister and I to Niagra Falls for a summer vacation. It was awe inspiring to see the power of water. Your poem brings this trip back to light and I thank you for posting such a beautiful sonnet to spark my memories.

A noteworthy, metaphoric appraisal penned in fine, flowing sonnet rhyme & verse, and indeed, the human spirit wherever destined to wander, akin like the powerful, flowing waters of the mighty Niagara Falls, we are all brothers & sisters, sourced and sconced from mighty beginnings..

Inspiring!

All true and well said. Anticipation pays off in due time. Thank you again.
Awed by the magnificence of Niagara Falls. I totally understand that. I remember visiting both sides of the falls as a young girl. It was an experience I will never forget. To me, though, this poem seems like more than the meaning on the first reading. In life, we have ups and downs, but if we have faith and hope, we can ride the waves and be successful. Beautifully written sonnet, Sami. Lydi** PS....the oil painting is gorgeous.

Note: Some verse touch on generating electricity from Niagara; another one touches on the 2 sides( the American side plus the Canadian side) that made the poet awed twice...

I like this poem metaphorically...and how you used the Falls to describe our journey in life.
I also like this poem very much because when I was a young kid, on one of our trips back to NY from Vermont we went to the Canadian side of the Falls...it was breathtaking.
I was awed...and I am awed at many things in life...
