Chapter 7

Chapter 7

A Chapter by Shawna May Sipes

Holly, Grace, and I walked around the mall drunk off our asses.

Hayden and Jonathan trailed behind us buzzed.

“You guys should stay at our place tonight.” Jonathan said from behind me.

I looked back and saw Hayden smiling at me.

“Yeah right, how are we going to pull that off?” Holly laughed as we rounded the mall for the third time.

Hayden walked up and put his arm around her shoulder. “Simple, you say you’re staying at Anabel’s. Anabel says she’s staying at your place.” He smiled flipping his hair out of his face.

I smiled and nodded. “Okay, I can do that.” I pulled my phone out and dialed my mom’s number.

“Hello?”

“Hey mom, is it okay if I stay with Holly tonight?” I tried not to slur my words.

“I guess. Is it okay with her mom?”

“She’s calling her now and asking.”

“Okay. Call me in the morning I guess.”

“Okay, I will.”

She didn’t say she loved me before she hung up.

It wasn’t a shock though.

I know my mom loves me. She just doesn’t know what to do with me.

I looked over at Holly who was talking to her mom on the phone.

“You guys have fun. I’ll be in my room looking at the walls.” Grace sighed. “Stupid fat a*s. He has it out for us.”

I wrapped my arm around her shoulder and laughed. “Yes, yes he does.” I looked around at all the other people walking around.

Everyone came here to hang out on Friday nights.

But don’t most towns do that?

I wonder if he’s here.

Did I see him already?

No, I’ll know when I see him.

We walked outside for a smoke and all sat down on the benches.

Hayden sat down next to me. “Can I have one?” He smiled.

I smiled back and handed him a Newport. “Don’t be bumming off me all night.” I chuckled.

“Not for cigarettes at least.” He smirked.

Holly sat down on the other side of me. “I told her we were on our way to your house.” She smiled. “This is going to be fun.”

“Yeah it will.” Hayden agreed putting his arms around our backs.

She looked at me and shook her head my smiling face. ‘No.’ She mouthed.

I ignored her taking a drag of my cigarette.

“S**t!” Holly gasped. “F**k dude call your mom.” She looked at me terrified.

“Why?” I asked worriedly quickly pulling my phone out.

“My mom called your mom looking for me.” She said sadly.

My mouth dropped and I called my mom.

“Did you seriously think you could get away with that!” She yelled.

“I’m sorry I-“

“I’m on my way be ready. Tell Holly I’m taking her home too.”

“Mom just let me explain!”

“I’m almost there.”

I hung up the phone and put my head in my hands. “I am so fucked.” I cried.

Hayden started laughing at me. “I can’t believe you actually tried that.”

I got up gave him a nasty look. “F**k you, Hayden!” I yelled making everyone look at me.

“No thank you.” He chuckled not even caring I was crying.

“What did your mom say?” Holly asked scared standing up after throwing her cigarette butt.

“She’s taking you home too.” I said looking down at my feet.

“Are you guys in trouble?” Grace asked walking over to us.

“I am.” I said wiping my eyes. “I don’t know if she is.”

My mom pulled up slamming her breaks. “Get in here!” She yelled from the window.

Holly and I walked over to the car staring at the ground.

I got in the front seat and Holly in the back.

“How stupid can you be?” She asked angrily pulling onto the road.

“Mom we were just-“

She hit me from the driver seat a couple times and I shut up.

“Did you seriously think I wouldn’t find out? What were you even planning on doing?” She was biting her tongue as she took one last swing at me.

Tears burning my cheeks as the dark makeup slid off my face.

The ride was silent until she got to Holly’s house.

“Bye Holly.” My mom said as she got out.

I sat there in tears looking out the window.

I need you now my love.

Are you on your way?

Are you even coming?

I need to know if you’re coming.

Please, send me a sign.

We pulled into our driveway and my mom got out slamming the door.

I crawled out and walked back to my room.

I took the bottle of sleeping pills and poured them into my hand.

I’m sorry love, but I don’t think you’re coming.

I took one last look in the mirror before I swallowed them.

Broken and lost, maybe this is how it’s supposed to be.

Darkness filled me and my room.
