Counting Calories

Counting Calories

A Poem by C.C. Marx
"

a period of time when I nearly started starving myself

"

200 for breakfast

No more

Maybe less

Lunch time comes

Maybe I’ll eat an apple

Or maybe I’ll skip

My stomach argues

But I ignore it.

Dinner comes

I’m starved

But I only eat half

Aren’t you hungry?

They ask me

I shake my head

No.

I lied.

So consumed

With my idea of perfection

For weeks

I stayed on

The ridiculous diet

But then I realized

I had to stop

Counting calories.

Well this is sad :/
I guess society comes into this too.. I was reading Hugo's conversation once with Amanda and he said if no one "looks" like Marilyn Monroe, she or he is not perfect... Well something like that at least..
And I hope you realize you don't need to starve yourself to look thin, to look skinny, to look pretty :)
Everyone is different in their own way I promise, and now look in the mirror... Tell me what YOU see, and then I'll tell you what I see. Our opinions (I guess you oculd call it) would be pretty different, and that's totally fine! Same goes with the definition of "perfect" or "beautiful". You probably won't think that your pretty, but we do. You probably think your a really bad poet, ha your totally wrong through my eyes.

Lol I hope I made sense... I never make sense e_e

Wow, very powerful Great work! Perfection is not your size, weight or how much you eat. It's who you are on the inside that makes you truly beautiful. society should stop and look around and see what they're doing to not only young girls but to boys, guys and men too. I know some men who starve themselves or have. I, myself attempted this, and stopped consuming as much as I would normally, during a difficult depression, but I got through it, and started a regular eating habit to help me. I stopped before it became a habit or addiction. I'm glad to hear that you have gone through and survived this. for that, I applaud you.

I've been here, but not by choice. When we were homeless, food had to be rationed. I barely ate 600 calories a day. Even when we got on our feet, I still didn't eat. I was used to starving myself to keep food for my little sister. I know how you feel. Starvation is a twisted, dark road. But this poem is a great interpretation of it. 100/100.

Thanks Maddie, not only for the review, but for sharing your story as well :)
A lot of people are so obsessed with the idea of perfection that they can't see that they are hurting themselves. Remember, you are always perfect!! I live how you turned something very real to you into a well written poem. Nice job!

i guess im not the only one who stay up all hours of the night clicking that refresh button over and over =P but i cant tell you how many times i have heard this or though this its beautifully illustrated and wonderfully and clearly conveyed, every poet can manipulate language it takes a real writer to use it, and you my friend are a real writer

I believe you captured what a lot of women deal with on a daily basis. Bravo! Bravo! Thanks for putting it in pen. It's sad but true. I'm glad you stopped too. Life is too short to worry over such things as this.

It's a sad commentary on how a lot of teenage girls (and women) live their lives due to some arbitrary number on the scale that, in their mind, states they are desirable...which is rubbish. I'm glad you stopped.
