Old together

Old together

A Poem by Soren

When we were young

We held each other so tight and talked through the night

You yelled at the top of your voice

One day we will grow old together”

Time ran on, I was always gone

As we held hands

You softly said

One day we will grow old together”

Months and years ran off the clock, we hardly talk

With a tentative touch

You whispered

One day we will grow old together”

Today we are old, your touch so cold

You withdraw

Not a word is said

We grew old together

A very strong and wise piece of poetry. Life often complicates and distracts from the most important thing that is truly worth living for. Love. We often fail to recognize this fact. Until it is much to late to live in its moment. A heartbreaking yet moving piece my friend.

Thank you so much dear poet. Your comments are deeply appreciated.

I enjoyed the read. Some things are meant to be. Love is hard work and responsibility. But mostly love is sacrifice and giving up that which we desire, even life. It is a most difficult thing to fathom, not being our own boss. But if anyone thinks differently I can only point them to the cross.

"Grow old along with me
The best is yet to be
When our time has come
We will be as one
God bless our love
God bless our love
Grow old along with me
Two branches of one tree
Face the setting sun
When the day is done
God bless our love
God bless our love
Spending our lives together
Man and wife together
World without end
World without end
Grow old along with me
Whatever fate decrees
We will see it through
For our love is true
God bless our love
God bless our love
God bless our love
God bless our love" John Lennon

So right you are.
So true, so rich ,so understanding. A wonderful piece from an artist I would say at the top of their talents but I suspect there is far more to go. So much empathy here.

Sorry Harry Chapin....but this reminded me of that song.

Indeed, time is a reckless driver who gets worse with the years. The poem describes well the situation of many, who let the needs of the world exclude intimacy. The ending is tragic, all the more so because it was preventable.

That blew me away Soren. I could feel this, the years passing, the love always there and the end, cold and desolate. I guess, just the way it is supposed to be.

A poem with a soul and a very solid ring to it. When I read it, I wished I had written this and that usually doesn't happen even when I read poems flowing in Iambic Pentameter lol. Kudos for this one Soren! For me, this is an unforgettable poem !

Growing apart instead of growing old together. I felt the change in temperature here Soren with the passing of the years. Relationships need nurturing. Many are taken for granted. A poignant piece of poetry. The conclusion, old, cold and lonely. Very nicely composed. Thank you.
