Close Friends

Close Friends

A Poem by streetrose

You say we are close friends

I say we are strangers, loving strangers

I do not know your favorite color, nor you mine

Our confidence lies not in each other

We get annoyed with each other

You with me, in particular

We are enigmas in each other’s gaze

Getting to know each other

But barely scratching the surfaces of our true selves

I do not know your fears, your true hopes

Your loves, your weaknesses, your strengths

Most of all, I do not know your soft side

Nor you mine, any of it

But you say we are close friends

Maybe you are right

After all, you are my closest friend

The one I talk to when loneliness is eating me alive

My hesitant confidante

But in all seriousness, I rather fear,

That once again, I am falling in love with you

A total stranger, who does not want or need my love

For while you are my close friend, I am not yours

Your poem touched my heart. I feel often times the words friend, close friend, lover, etc are not truly understood. The definition of each of these varies from person to person. I believe we need to come up with a word or term that can really understood by all as to how deep we feel about someone. Not saying I know that word, lol, but just that the human race needs it. Again enjoyed your poem. Thanks.

This is so interesting. It feels sad and lonely...a bit misunderstood. I'm still thinking about this. I'm blessed to have a few friends who know everything - ugly, nice, secrets, my humor, etc. and I know theirs. When I think about it, those are truly give and take, listen and speak, things said with only a look relationships. Then, as you say here, there are others where it seems a bit out of balance - one person is the listener while the other only speaks, one is the struggling one while the other is the rock, so forth and so on. In a relationship like the latter, one person - usually the one leaning on the other - will feel closer because they have been so vulnerable, while the other person has not either been able, or has not been given the chance to be that way. This is turning into a tangling review with so many "this person" and "that person" that I wonder if it will make any sense. Suffice to say, that I enjoy your poems so much and they tap into something in me. I'll be thinking on this one.

I'm so glad! It just got all jumbled, and I got overwhelmed with it so left as it was. :)
What a hard write...
and what truly makes friends.
So much to think about-
do you have to know their favorite color-
or just "get" them?
hmmm.... I get the feeling that you really want to be closer to this person and your loneliness and fear is eating away that.
all in all- good write.
