Chapter 5: The Phone Call

Chapter 5: The Phone Call

A Chapter by Adele Potter
"

We almost get our asses busted.

"

Almost the End of Wednesday, July 3

9:56 PM

Somewhere in Tannington.

"How can we not be out of Ohio yet?" Zeke complained.

"Well, we live on the city that's farthest on the eastern end of the state, and we have to drive west," I said. "Plus with all the screwing around you three do"" I glared at them. ""we're probably about halfway to the center of the state."

"Plus the fact that we want this trip to take as long as possible," Logan added.

"Not all of us," I muttered.

10:30 PM

Logan's cell phone rang. He picked it up with a hand that he probably should've kept on the wheel, and looked at the caller ID with his eyes that he definitely should've kept on the road. As soon as he read the name, he went very pale. He turned around (another unwise move), and tossed it to me. "It's for you, Luna," he said.

The caller ID read: Evelyn Peterson (Mom).

I began to freak out. If I answered it, and she heard the car, she'd know something was up, since most places Logan and I liked to go in Rosewood are closed by 9. Add that to my horrible lying skills, and… Well, we would be officially screwed. But I knew I could never convince Logan to answer it, and if we didn't pick up, Mom would start freaking out. So I said, "Pull over so she doesn't hear the car."

He pulled over right away, no complaints, no questions asked. I could tell he was nervous, too. Before I answered, I told Zeke and Spencer, "Be quiet while I talk to her, okay?"

"Sure," said Spencer.

"Scout's honor," Zeke agreed.

"Hello?" I said.

"Hi, baby," said Mom. "We just wanted to call to say goodnight. We tried the house phone first. Why didn't you pick up?"

Damn. I wish I'd thought of that. It might've stopped this whole thing. Mom's wrath is more than enough to get Logan to not do something.

"Uh… the battery died," I "explained" (lied).

"Then why did it ring?"

Double damn.

"Um… I don't know? Look, Logan and I put it on the charger, so I guess it came back on. Anyway, you know how quiet that ringer is." (The one time I've been grateful.) "We probably just didn't hear it. Just call Logan's cell from now on, okay?"

"All right," she said. "How are things going?"

I laughed breezily. Or at least I hope it sounded breezy. "Oh, don't worry, everything's totally cool."

"Night-night, Luna."

"Goodnight, Mom."

Victory. I tossed Logan's phone at him. "Next time, you get it."
