Dark

Dark

A Poem by Shannon Miller

One thing I fear

More than anything else

Is losing you

I don’t mean

“I hate you”

“You’re dead to me”

I mean

“They’re gone”

“We did everything we could”

My greatest fear

More than drowning

More than being buried alive

More than being raped

Is getting that call

From mom

From the police

That they found your body

Lifeless, cold

I imagine speaking

At your funeral

“They meant more to me

Than anything

I understood their spirit

And they understood mine

Better than anyone else”

Words I’ve thought

But never said to you

A world without you

Is dark and cold

Your light is bright

Your soul is warm

You feel more deeply

Think more critically

Act more loudly

Speak more boldly

My world without you

Is not a world

I ever want to live in

My world without you

Is cold

And meaningless

It is not a world

I ever want to feel

You mean more to me

Than you will ever know

Our bond is something

I truly treasure

That bond is something

I never want to lose

No matter what

I love you
