Jump

Jump

A Poem by Shannon Miller

We jumped
No parachutes
We just jumped
But you, silly
You jumped backwards
You couldn’t see
What was rising up from below
All you saw was me
So we fell
And I saw you
But I also saw the bottom
The rushing rapids
The rocks, the snakes
But I saw you
And the exuberant smile
On your face as we fell
And I smiled too
But then you turned
You saw it all
The water, the rocks, the snakes
You stopped seeing me
You saw a lifeline
And you grabbed it
But I was still falling
I hit the water
I almost drowned
Then you found a cave
With a fire and blanket
You weren’t happy
But you were safe, warm
I floated, and then fell again
Down a waterfall
And still, I fall
Cold, wet, alone
Wondering what it’s like
In your warm cave of comfort
But I also know
You are no more happy than I
You are only warm and safe
And I will keep falling
And then maybe drown
